Check your store for broken size runs

The same check we ran across 298 apparel catalogues, run on yours, now.

Reads your public catalogue · no login · no install · nothing private

We read /products.json on your storefront — the same thing any shopper’s browser can read — and your robots.txt first, which we obey. No login, no inventory counts, no customer data, and nothing is written anywhere on your store. We use your address to send you this one result. You are not added to any list.

No Shopify store, or not a public one? Work out how many of each size to reorder from numbers you already have.

What counts as broken

A size run is broken when every size in the middle of the run is unavailable while the style is still on sale. Sold out entirely is not broken — nothing is being misrepresented to anyone. The damage is the style that still reads “in stock” to a shopper who cannot buy their size, with stock stranded in the ends of the run.

Across 298 apparel catalogues we scanned, 63.8% had at least one on sale at the moment we looked, with two or more sizes still sitting there behind the hole — and among the 101 brands carrying 200 or more size runs, 95 did. Those are the conservative figures: a style whose core is gone but which is down to one last size is sold through, and it is not in them. Your check names styles the same way — only the ones with two or more sizes still on sale get listed — and it also tells you how many had the core gone by the looser reading, so you can see both and judge which one you are looking at.

What you get back

Every style where the whole core of the run is gone while the style is still buyable, the sizes that are missing, the sizes still on sale, and a link to each one so you can check us. If nothing is broken, it says that — about one store in six gets that answer, and it is a real result rather than a polite one.

What this is not

It is not a forecast. From outside your store there is no sales history, so the “core” of a run is its middle by position rather than by demand — which makes this measure conservative for brands whose demand skews to one end. It is also a snapshot: a size that is back in stock tomorrow was still missing today.

It is also not a trial of the app. Sizecurve is a Shopify app that does this every week on your own data, with your sales and returns behind it, and emails you the week a run breaks. This page is the part of it that can be run from outside, on a store that has never heard of us.

The method, in full

The definition above was written down and frozen before we scanned a single store, together with a kill criterion. Both, and everything we got wrong on the way, are published: We checked 298 apparel catalogues for broken size runs.
